If you're reading this, you've already done more than most of the students who'll win. A brief, honest note about the part nobody talks about.
The students who win are not who you think
They are not all valedictorians. They are not all from prep schools. They are not all 'naturals.' They are mostly students who applied to a lot of things, were honest in their essays, and didn't take a 'no' personally.
Most national scholarships work hard to fund students who have been overlooked. Many local scholarships have so few applicants that the bar is just 'show up with a complete application.'
The story you think is too small is usually the right one
Students leave their best material on the floor because it feels too ordinary. The job at the diner. The sibling you helped raise. The Saturday at the community garden. These are exactly the stories committees remember.
Write the small, true thing. Apply to more than you think you should. Let other people read the essay. The rest is not in your control, and that's okay.
